How to Reduce CPA in Google Ads: 7 Steps That Work

Google AdsCPAOptimization

High CPA is the most common reason businesses get disillusioned with paid advertising. Usually the problem isn’t the channel itself, but how the campaigns are set up and managed. Here are the steps I start optimization with.

1. Check placement relevance in the Display Network

In the Display Network, most of the wasted budget usually comes from 10-15% of placements with low conversion rates. Regularly cleaning up the placement list is the first thing worth doing.

2. Rebuild your negative keyword list

Irrelevant queries quietly eat up budget. Negative keywords shouldn’t be collected just once at launch; they need to be gathered regularly, based on the search terms report.

3. Split campaigns by type of demand

Hot and cold demand convert differently. If they’re mixed in one campaign, the algorithms learn on averaged data, which makes it harder for the bidding strategy to find the best audience.

4. Set up accurate conversion goals

Without precise goals (lead, call, purchase), Google’s automated strategies simply have nothing to learn from. Check that your goals are counting actual target actions, not every click on a button.

5. Test ads systematically

Not “change the copy and see what happens,” but testing hypotheses: different offers, different value propositions, different formats. Statistical significance needs to be checked, not eyeballed.

6. Use bid adjustments

Device, region, time of day, audience: every dimension has segments that convert differently. Bid adjustments let you avoid overpaying for less valuable traffic.

7. Look at CPA together with lead quality

The lowest CPA isn’t always the most profitable one, not if it comes at the cost of falling lead quality. Optimization needs to happen in coordination with the sales team and data on closed deals.
