ChatGPT Ads: Visual Ad Format and New Measurement Tools

ChatGPT AdsAI AdvertisingAttributionNew Ad Formats

On October 5, 2026, OpenAI announced a new visual ad format in ChatGPT – image-based ads that will first be tested during image generation. At the same time, the platform significantly expanded measurement: Pixel and Conversions API, more than 20 attribution and incrementality partners, and optimization that takes view-through conversions into account. For Ukrainian advertisers, the key point is different – Ukraine is still not on the list of countries where a ChatGPT ad account can be opened self-serve.

In short:

  • Visual format – a US test from late October 2026, with a limited group of advertisers.
  • Ads are labeled and kept separate from the image the user is generating.
  • Measurement: Pixel, CAPI, integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, 10 attribution partners, geo experiments for incrementality.
  • Conversion optimization now also learns from view-through conversions.
  • Self-serve Ads Manager – in 63 countries, Ukraine is not among them (as of October 6, 2026).

Over 2026, advertising in ChatGPT has gone from a closed pilot in the US to a self-serve platform in dozens of countries. According to OpenAI, ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people every week – an audience no performance marketer can afford to ignore.

At the same time, according to industry publications, insufficient measurement has been the main thing holding advertisers back from ChatGPT Ads all year. The October update addresses exactly that – and adds a new format built for visual products and services.

What happened

OpenAI published two posts at once – an announcement on its main site and a longer post on its Ads blog about measurement. The update has three parts.

Visual ad format. These are image ads that show product inspiration, product usage or the experiences a product makes possible. The first test will run during image generation in ChatGPT: the user creates an image, and a labeled ad appears next to it, separate from the image. According to OpenAI, the ad does not become part of the generated image and does not influence ChatGPT’s answers.

Testing begins later in October 2026 in the US with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI has not disclosed pricing, creative specifications or dates for other markets.

Expanded measurement. The platform supports its own Pixel and Conversions API (CAPI) to measure purchases, leads, app installs and sign-ups. It adds integrations for sending conversion data from existing systems, attribution partners and the first incrementality programs.

Brand safety. Negative Phrases – the ability to exclude specific conversation topics – are now available to qualifying advertisers. OpenAI is also developing brand suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science, without giving the partners access to private user conversations.

How it works

What Before Now What to do
Formats Ads next to ChatGPT answers Visual format added, tested during image generation (US) Prepare lifestyle photos of the product in use
Conversion data Pixel and CAPI Plus Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp integrations Check whether your CDP or CRM is among the partners
Attribution Limited set of solutions 10 partners: AppsFlyer, Adjust, Branch, Singular, Triple Whale and others Connect ChatGPT Ads in the same system as your other channels
Optimization Learned from click-through conversions Also learns from view-through conversions Review how you compare ChatGPT with other channels
Incrementality Not available Geo experiments with Haus, Measured, WorkMagic (early stage) Plan your own lift test, not just last-click

View-through attribution means counting a conversion that happened after a person saw an ad but did not click it. OpenAI explains why this matters for ChatGPT in particular: people come to complete a task, and clicking an ad is often not their immediate next step.

According to OpenAI, in an early analysis of global campaigns, 52.7% of eligible one-day view-through conversions happened within an hour of the ad impression. Advertisers can choose a click-through attribution window that fits their buying cycle and add a one-day view-through window. These settings change reporting only, not how a campaign optimizes.

A separate tool is Event Quality Score (EQS), which rates the quality of conversion signals sent via Pixel and CAPI. It determines what the optimization actually learns from.

Why it matters

For advertisers, ChatGPT has so far been a new channel with unclear returns. Without proper measurement, every test ended with the question “is this actually working?”. Now ChatGPT Ads can be connected to the same attribution system as Google Ads or Meta Ads, and channels can be compared by the same rules.

The second change is subtler but matters more for budgets. If optimization learns from view-through conversions, ChatGPT Ads may show more conversions than channels where you count clicks only. Comparing such numbers head-to-head with search ads is a mistake we covered in detail in our article on attribution in Google Ads.

The visual format opens ChatGPT to niches where purchase decisions are made with the eyes: interiors, fashion, beauty, travel, gifts. Someone generating an image of a living room or a party outfit is already in a choosing mindset – and that is exactly where OpenAI is placing the ads.

Early results: how to read them

OpenAI published several examples validated by measurement partners:

  • WeightWatchers – cost per acquisition on ChatGPT Ads was 15.3% below the brand’s blended paid-search benchmark (according to DV Rockerbox).
  • Dose – statistically significant lift, with 67% of incremental purchases from new customers; a geo experiment estimated 2.3 times more incremental orders than last-click attribution showed (WorkMagic).
  • Portland Leather – 93% of visitors from ChatGPT Ads were new (Triple Whale).

These figures were selected by the platform for its own announcement, with no budgets, test durations or sample sizes. Each answers a different question: CPA compares the cost of a conversion, the share of new visitors speaks to reaching new audiences, and the geo experiment comes closest to causal evidence – but for one brand only.

What to watch out for. Don’t apply “−15% CPA vs. search” to your own budget. One brand’s result, measured with one vendor’s model, is an illustration, not a forecast. The comparison has to be yours: the same conversion definition, the same attribution window, the same period.

Who it’s for

Biggest winners are brands with visual products selling in the US and other listed countries: home decor and furniture, apparel, beauty, travel, gifts. They will be the first able to test the visual format once it moves beyond the pilot.

Useful right now for advertisers already testing ChatGPT Ads in available countries: the expanded measurement works for all formats, not just the new one.

Not relevant yet for businesses selling only in Ukraine – there is neither a self-serve account for Ukrainian companies nor any announced ad serving to users in Ukraine.

What it means for Ukraine

According to OpenAI’s help center, to use self-serve, the legal entity that advertises and is billed must be based in one of the listed countries. As of October 6, 2026, the list includes 63 countries – the entire European Economic Area, the UK, Switzerland, the US, Canada, and parts of Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. Ukraine is not on it.

For Ukrainian businesses, this means two different situations:

  1. A company with a legal entity in the EU, the UK or the US – for example, a Polish sp. z o.o. for exports or a US LLC for selling on Amazon – can open an account now and advertise in the listed markets. For sellers who have gone international (see our overview on starting to sell on Amazon), this is an additional channel in the same markets.
  2. A company with only a Ukrainian legal entity can sign up at ads.openai.com and get notified when self-serve becomes available – this is how OpenAI describes the process for countries outside the list.

Editorial analysis

We have not tested the visual format – it hasn’t launched even in the US yet, and Ukrainian clients without a foreign legal entity can’t access the platform. So what follows is our assessment, not test results.

The main signal of this update is not the new format but measurement. OpenAI has effectively acknowledged that large budgets won’t come to the platform without independent measurement, and closed the biggest gap in one announcement: CAPI, attribution in familiar tools, first steps in incrementality.

At the same time, moving optimization to view-through conversions is a change that is easy to misread. The same picture is well known from Meta Ads, where the default attribution window includes one day after view: such a channel “reports” more conversions than a channel with click-only attribution. Without an incrementality test, these numbers can’t be compared directly with Google Ads – and we apply the same conclusion to ChatGPT Ads. We will update this article once we have our own data from client accounts.

Practical example

An online home decor store with a legal entity in Poland sells to Germany and Poland via Google Ads and Meta Ads. How to prepare for ChatGPT Ads:

  • Open an account at ads.openai.com under the Polish legal entity and run a small test in the available formats in one market.
  • Install the Pixel and set up CAPI, check the event quality score.
  • Connect ChatGPT Ads to the same attribution system that already measures other channels.
  • Compare ChatGPT with search only on the same attribution window – look at click-through and view-through conversions separately.
  • Build a library of interior photos with products in real-life scenes – exactly the kind of images the visual format needs.

What to do right now

  • Check whether your business has a legal entity in one of the 63 available countries.
  • If yes – sign up at ads.openai.com and start with a small test in the available formats.
  • If not – sign up to be notified about the launch and prepare your measurement in the meantime.
  • Clean up your conversion events: Pixel and CAPI deduplication, the same conversion definitions across all channels.
  • Check whether your attribution vendor or CDP is on OpenAI’s partner list, and confirm the integration works for your country.
  • Prepare visual creatives showing the product in use – you’ll need them in ChatGPT and other AI formats.

Expert tip. Judge your first ChatGPT Ads test not by the CPA in the interface but by lift: run the campaign in some regions and compare sales with regions without ads. That’s cheaper than spending months optimizing a channel on a metric that includes view-through conversions.

FAQ

What is the visual ad format in ChatGPT? These are ads with images of a product in use or the experience it offers. OpenAI will first test them during image generation in ChatGPT, labeled as ads and separate from the generated image.

When will the new format be available? Testing starts in late October 2026 in the US with a limited group of advertisers. OpenAI has not given dates for other countries or a general launch.

Can I advertise in ChatGPT from Ukraine? Not self-serve with a Ukrainian legal entity yet: as of October 6, 2026, Ukraine is not among the 63 countries where Ads Manager is available. A company with a legal entity in a listed country can open an account and advertise in the available markets.

Do ads affect ChatGPT’s answers? According to OpenAI, no. Ads are labeled and separate from the answer or the generated image, and advertisers have no access to user conversations.

Which measurement tools does ChatGPT Ads support? Its own Pixel and Conversions API, integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp, attribution via AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin, plus Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL for full-funnel measurement.

Why might ChatGPT Ads show more conversions than search? Because optimization now takes view-through conversions into account, and reports can include a one-day view-through window. Compare it with search only under the same attribution rules.

How much does advertising in ChatGPT cost? OpenAI has not disclosed pricing for the visual format. For existing formats, advertisers set their own budget in the ad account, and the real cost per conversion only becomes clear after a test in your market.

Should I allocate budget to ChatGPT Ads now? If you have a legal entity in an available country and solid measurement – yes, a small test is justified. If not, prepare your conversion signals and creatives first, and keep the budget in proven channels.

Conclusion

The October update turns ChatGPT Ads into a measurable channel rather than just a trendy experiment, and adds a format for visual niches. For most Ukrainian advertisers, the practical step for now is to prepare measurement and creatives, so they can enter the channel on day one when it opens for Ukraine – or right now through a foreign legal entity.

If you want to assess whether ChatGPT Ads makes sense for your business and how to compare it with other channels – request an audit.
